Should I go for HTML or WordPress

Most often you hear the words WordPress and HTML thrown around when it comes to creating webpages. If you are not a UI/UX developer, you will no clue about these things. Through this blog, we will try to demystify these two and help you determine which one to choose when it comes to developing your unique website.

Hypertext Markup Language or HTML is a coding language used for creating a web page from scratch. On the other hand, WordPress refers to a content management system that allows you to publish content, host media, and upload files without a single code. With WordPress, there is no steep learning curve. Developing a website using HTML will make it simple; however, you will need additional JS and CSS codes to make it dynamic.

Knowing WordPress

  • Easy to work with and no technical knowledge required. This does away with the use of knowing coding language. Unlike HTML, you can use the WordPress interface to create and /or update your content and web page; customize website appearance and functionality, and improve SEO.
  • Highly customizable. WordPress has several plugins in its official directory and limitless plugins in the theme directory. This allows you to upgrade your website with the least amount of effort. Plugins function as code extensions enabling increased power and functionality of your website.
  • Being an open-source platform, WordPress is in a constant state of development. Anyone can create and/or develop plugins and themes, resolve any bugs, etc. This allows for the rapid development of the platform.

  • That said, WordPress is not without its flaws. The major flaws of WordPress are:

  • No advanced customizations. WordPress is developed using MySQL and PHP. While this allows for use by non-developers, for advanced customizations, one has to know scripting languages like CSS, HTML, and JavaScript - things not easy to learn.
  • Regular website maintenance. One has to regularly update their website to address any compatibility issues. This requires keeping the WordPress website and other elements updated. This is a tedious task if you are short of time. Utilizing a hosting agency can help, but can be costly.

Knowing HTML

A markup language, Hypertext Marking Langauge, or HTML contains tags that aid in the classification of elements on a web page. It is an integral component, along with JavaScript and CSS, for website creation. HTML provides basic structure while JavaScript and CSS enhance the website - CSS with visual enhancement and JavaScript makes it interactive.

Technically speaking, JavaScript is a programming language while CSS and HTML help in style information and page content structure, respectively. Of note, one can also generate a static WordPress website using HTML.

Advantages of HTML

  • Does not need regular and frequent backup. Since static websites do not get constantly updated, the need for regular backup is done away with. Backup only when you make changes to your website, the same goes for updates.
  • Complete control over the website. Using HTML allows you to have complete control over your site. HTML allows easier code access and modification process, resulting in greater flexibility when it comes to feature integration.
  • Fewer Resources. Creating a website using HTML will not cost a bomb. You can run your website on cheaper servers, unlike WordPress website which requires MySQL or PHP servers.

  • Disadvantages of HTML

  • Not beginner-friendly. While static HTML is useful for basic websites, knowledge of coding is required if you want to update any content. Knowledge of CSS is also required if you want to go for that brand new trending look for your website.
  • Exorbitant maintenance cost: If you prefer HTML to build your unique website, then coding knowledge is a must. Lack of it will require you to cough out money every time you need to make any updates or changes. While one can learn coding to reduce cost, it is, however, time-consuming.

To Conclude

Changes and frequency of updates on your website should be the main deciding factors. If your website does not require any additional content, frequent changes, or updates, then opting for HTML would be the best choice since it can improve the performance of your website.

Conversely, if the growth of your website along with constant updates is of paramount importance, then WordPress is the one to opt for. Why? For starters, you can make the changes all by yourself, eliminating the need for coders and developers. You will also get plenty of options when it comes to plugins that can improve your website’s performance and provide high growth to your business.
